Autumn

As temperatures become more pleasant, this season is perfect for open‐air activities

By Bruna Velon

After carnival, as the 40‐degree season draws to an end, the frenetic rhythm of the city begins to settle and the climate becomes lighter. This is when the year unofficially begins for cariocas.  Now is the time to step out of the frosty air‐conditioned apartment and enjoy what the city has to offer outside. During the Fall, the sun still shines but the delicious autumnal breeze will keep you refreshed and even better still, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the calm of the low season, visiting places that were teaming with (sweaty) people just months ago in the summer. For the avid photographers out there, this is also the preferred season for shutterbugs, amateur or professional, as the warm autumnal glow renders the city even more photogenic.

Mureta da Urca

An idyllic and charming neighbourhood that gives onto Botofogo Bay, framed by Rio’s famous hills and Christ the Redeemer in the background. In Urca you will find the world‐famous Sugarloaf Mountain but also one of the most beautiful spots to watch the day go by. Just make yourself comfortable on the old wall that skirts the edge of the bay, and take in the beautiful views that extend to the larger Guanabara Bay. To make your day even sweeter, grab a beer and tasty appetizer from one of the two bars. There’s the famous Bar Urca, renowned for its excellent appetisers and is often packed; this is where cariocas mean when they say “shall we go to the wall?” (vamos pra mureta?). Then there is the spot in front of Urca Grill, affectionately known as pobreta (poor wall) as the prices are more reasonable here. During this time of the year it is easier to find a spot of your own on the old wall and, from there, take in the breath‐taking sunset.

Picnic

It’s time to spread out your checked blanket, your tidbits and drinks now that there is no risk of you yourself frying in the sun. And with the weather more settled, the chances of the rain putting a dampener on your plans are minimal. Pack your snacks, a cool bag, perhaps some flowers for decoration and find a lovely shady spot to lie upon the grass. Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Parque Lage, Parque do Grajaú, Bosque da Barra, Quinta d Boa Vista and Tijuca National Park are all excellent options. Just remember that some of these places have special areas for picnicking and have to be reserved in advance.

Market Fairs

Squares and streets in Rio often host art, music and gastronomy, great activities to get you out of the house at the weekends. And the good thing about the autumn is that you won’t be fighting over a patch of shade like it is life or death. On the first Saturday of every month the traditional Feira do Rio Antigo (Old Rio Fair) takes place on Rua do Lavradio in Lapa. Here you will find over 300 different stalls, form fashion to antiques, street food and free shows. In Laranjeiras, two good options are the market fairs on Rua General Glicério, on Saturdays from 10am, and in Praça São Salvador, Sundays starting from 11am; both with fantastic live chorinhomusic. For those that love antiques, Feira da Gávea, in the tree‐lined Praça Santos Dumont, takes place every Sunday from 9am. It’s also worth sticking around for lunch in one of the many restaurants in Baixo Gávea.

Joatinga, Prainha e Grumari

Rio’s coastline in summertime can often be chaotic; overcrowded beaches, traffic jams and difficulty parking. However in Autumn, life by the seaside becomes much easier. Those with a car (or a lift) can go to the sought‐after Joatinga Beach, in São Conrado. Or there is the spectacular Prainha beach where you can spend the day taking walks in the nature reserve (Área de Proteção Ambiental), surfing or just lazing on the beach contemplating the sheer beauty. You could extend your road‐trip even a little further still to neighbouring Grumari.

Travel to the Lake Region and Costa Verde

Juliana Colussi

Low season in Rio means lower prices and less people. The perfect conditions for a weekend escape to the exuberant coastal region of Rio State and we forecast lots of sunshine and tranquillity. In the Lake Region, the charming coastal resort Búzios offers dozens of stunning beaches, restaurants, shops and beach clubs. Arraial do Cabo is Rio’s own Carribean paradise, with white sandy beaches and crystalline waters. Then on Rio’s southern coastline, Costa Verde, there is Angra dos Reis and the historic town of Paraty. A region of turquoise‐blue seas, desert‐islands, waterfalls, hidden gems only reachable by foot or by boat.
