Stand Up Paddle

Where to practice the newest sport to take Rio by storm

Requiring good concentration and even better balance, Stand Up Paddle (SUP) would be a great activity if it were just for the physical exercise and mental discipline required alone. But add to that the sumptuous backdrops that Rio provides, its lagoons and beaches, and it’s not hard to see why SUP is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports amon Cariocas. Whether practiced as a sport or purely for leisure, it is accessible to all ages and finding a point to hire equipment is super easy. “Rio is one of the best places to practice SUP, thanks to its beaches and lagoons that bring a variety of conditions making it ideal for both amateurs and professionals. Not to mention it is one of the best ways to be in contact with nature, in the water itself!”, explains Marcela Antunes, SUP instructor and photographer specialized in water sports. In front of her company Barefoot Photography, whose incredible photos illustrate this list, Marcela takes us through her Top5 spots to practice SUP.

Ilhas Tijuca

This archipelago, lying about 2km out from the coast between Barra da Tijuca and São Conrado, remained practically unnoticed by Cariocas until it was recently “rediscovered” bSUP enthusiasts. Its about a 30-minute crossing, starting from Praia dos Amores (known as Quebra-Mar) in Barrinha. Here there are various places to rent boards and it is a great spot to practice in calmer waters. “Even for the more experienced, the crossing should be done in flat water conditions, and as for beginners, with instructors and a support boat. The best time to set off is 7:30am and come back around 11am before the wind really starts to blow” Marcela
advises. Crystal-clear waters and an area abundance in marine wildlife, there is even a mini canyon perfect for a daring leap from the top of the rock. A real go-pro paradise.

Ilha de Cotunduba

Praia Vermelha in Urca is a hotspot for watersports, such as SUP and canoeing, as well as providing places to rent boards and paddles. This is the best departure point to get to Ilha de Cotonduba, an environmental protected area and as such it is prohibited to set foot on the island. “It is one of the most unique trips. From the sea it is possible to see Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, the city’s skyline and the Rio-Niterói Bridge. Those with a bit more experience will be able to do this without difficulty”, our expert adds.

Posto 6, Copacabana

You’ll find calm waters in this quiet nook by Copacabana Fort hence why it is one of the classic SUP spots in Rio where many SUP schools are based. “Even if you go for a quick paddle by Copacabana it is worth it. For the more adventurous, it’s worth extending your course to Praia do Diabo and there you’ll come upon a unique view of Morro Dois Irmãos, which is nicely framed by Praia do Diabo and Arpoador Rock. Few Cariocas have seen this view” Marcela says. It is good to remember that because of its big waves Praia do Diabo is often busy with surfers, so be careful not to arrive right in the middle of their surfing.

Restinga da Marambaia

“This course is the most unique of all as you will be paddling through a mangrove with a view of the beach”, she says. If you want to do this paddle route there are a few recommendations to take on board. This protected mangrove is within a military area, as such it is prohibited to set foot on the sand. Nonetheless, the view from the water is so incredible that you won’t even want to leave it. Whether experienced or a beginner you will need the help of an instructor as the mangrove is a bit of a labyrinth. And because it is a natural canal, the current can be very strong so make sure to check the tide signboards.

Arpoador

With one of the most emblematic backdrops in the Cidade Maravilhosa, the crystalline waters of the “Arpex” hosts SUP enthusiasts of every level. At the end of the day, enthusiasts are treated to something really quite special: a beautiful sunset over Morro Dois Irmãos, an iconic image that is etched into the mind of every Carioca. “This moment is worthy of the applause it receives. It is a truly unique angle to appreciate this scene.”
