Cocktail Jugs

Good things are for sharing, even cocktails!

By Rafael Cavalieri

As cocktail culture spread throughout Rio, the city’s bars are investing more and more into daring cocktail menus. But it isn’t always possible to appreciate the best of the city’s mixologists at a friendly price. Cocktail jugs are a good solution to make the prices go down a little easier. Sangria, clerico, mojito and even the classic bloody mary are just some of the options that are served at that perfect quantity to share between friends on a lively night out. Check out our selection of the best, get your friends together and raise your glasses to lower prices!

¡Venga!

This bar is something of a pioneer amongst tapas bars in Rio. Whether in the small but charming branch in Leblon or the more spacious iteration in Ipanema, you can savour spanish-inspired classics such as the jamón croquette, paella, huevos locos among other delicacies. Accompany your tapas with one of the three house sangrias which are served in either litre or half-litre jugs. The eponymous cocktail comes with white wine, lemonade orange liqueur and fruit (R$52 and R$72). The Fresas combines sparkling wine with lemonade, cognac and fruit (R$69 and R$95). And for those that don’t drink the non-alcoholic option is a delicious infusion of grape juice, seasonal fruits, strawberry and cinnamon (R$42 and R$62).

Entretapas

Another bar serving up delicious spanish tidbits, Entretapas is headed up by chef Jan Santos who spent many years in Europe. The house serves one of the best jamón croquettes in town and it makes the perfect accompaniment for the flavourful sangrias on offer; four options that come in 1-litre jugs. The recipe makes use seasonal fruits along with brandy and orange liqueur while the alcoholic base provides the variables: white wine (R$74), red wine (R$74) cava brut (R$104) or cava brut rosé (R$115). The super popular Aperol Spritz can also be ordered by the jug here for R$115.

El Gordo

Another restaurant that serves tapas but this time the Iberian influence isn't Spanish but Portuguese. This bar is a branch of a popular Lisbon chain which even has its own guest house in exclusive beach resort Trancoso, Bahia. Don’t allow the chaotic decor to distract you enough to miss out on the alheira (portuguese sausage typically made without pork) and duck liver with caramelised onions. To drink, the sangrias are served in elegant jugs garnished with Bahian canela sticks. The different versions are red wine (R$78), white (R$78), rosé (R$78) and green (R$78), sparkling (R$98) and champagne (R$181) which complement the menu nicely.

Espaço 7zero6

Beautiful views over the Ipanema coast is just one of the draws of this restaurant and bar located on the top floor of Hotel Praia Ipanema. But it’s more than the gorgeous vista that has put this place on the map. Cocktails such as the clericot, made with white or sparkling wine combined with spiced citrus fruits and orange liqueur over ice (R$57 for 600ml jug) are sold in their droves. But if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous try the Tiq & Taq, a fusion of Tiquira, an aguardiente made from cassava, lychee liqueur, Japanese cucumber and lime juice (R$42).

Barthodomeu

This mansion in Ipanema is the perfect post-beach destination or even night-out spot given it remains open until the early hours of the morning. Another attraction is its musical lineup which changes up every day. On the tables, amongst the bottles of beer, you’ll see their portly 1.5-litre jugs filled with their variety of cocktails. From the refreshing mojito made with rum, mint, lime and sparkling water (R$71.60) to the indulgent piña colada a mixture of rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice (R$82.80) or the classic queen of hangover cures, the bloody mary combining vodka and spiced tomato juice.
